Plan around the way you will use it.
Start with daily routines
Discuss sleeping, cooking, laundry, visitors and storage. The right layout depends on how someone lives, not just how many square feet they need.
Discuss accessibility early
Bring up step-free entry, doorway clearances, shower access and space to move around furniture. Any accessibility features must be designed and specified for your project.
Keep connections comfortable
Plan the path between homes, exterior lighting, shade and private outdoor space so being close still feels independent.
A few questions to get started.
- Who will live here now, and might their needs change?
- Is one bedroom enough, or would a second room be useful?
- Are there mobility or caregiving needs to discuss?
